As well as providing the music for songs, mariachi music serves for dancing as well, often with foot-stamping steps which descend from Spanish Flamenco. Mariachi music began to acquire its current popularity in the 1930s, when band members began wearing the typical “charro” outfit that is familiar today - the short black jacket, tight trousers and wide-brimmed “sombrero” hat, all with silver trimmings.
